Lee Kuan Yew

Going by his initials, LKY was born in British colonized Singapore. As a youth who experienced the Japanese occupation of his country during WWII, his views about colonialism shifted.

LKY was trained as a lawyer in Britain before returning to his country to advocate for independence, all in view that the former British colonies in Southeast Asia would become the single country of Malaysia, especially as Singapore was considered too small to stand alone.

After independence, the conjoint country didn’t work. Singapore started all over on its own with LKY as prime minister. He found it difficult to sleep; there was no army to protect the island nation, racial issues were unsettled, unemployment high…

LKY enacted a lot of policies that helped develop the country, most of which inconvenienced the citizens but beneficial on the long run. All were created to suit the peculiarities of the young nation and mostly were unlike Western policies.

One is the health sector where the citizens co-paid for services. Compulsory saving scheme for workers towards pension out of which permanent homes were bought for them; also, investments were made for them in the companies owning the bus line workers used for transport 😂

With his family.

Years later, countries like Japan, China etc sent citizens to Singapore to learn what makes the island country what it is. Now, Singapore is the financial centre of the region, previously the smallest country without resources aside it’s coastline.

LKY died in 2015 @ 91 years but his legacy still lives on.
