Beryl as a gemstone has its major constituent as beryllium, the fourth element in the periodic table. Beryl is still used as a source of beryllium in making of alloys.

Emerald

As a jewel, Beryl has its varieties. Pure Beryl is colorless but Emerald is the greenish type, Aquamarine is the blue Beryl stone and Morganite is the red variety.


Beryl was used as the lens of the first set of eyeglasses made in Italy in the 13th century. As a result, the root word for eyeglasses in German come from Beryl.

A draw-back in mining Beryl is the carcinogenic effect it has. It causes adverse effects to the lungs.
