Red fort

The emperor; Shah Jahan decided to move the capital of the Mughal empire from Agra to present-day Old Delhi. He needed a new palace and the Red fort was the result in 17th century.

The Red fort was constructed by the same architect who was behind the Taj Mahal. Both buildings are located across each other. The blend of cultures - Persian, Hindu, Islamic, with white marble shining in the inner walls, displays India’s long history.

The architectural beauty of the Red fort withstood the collapse of empires, flames of war, turbulence of servitude under the British and destruction to some of its structures.

Every year, on national day in India, the prime minister delivers a speech to the nation from the Red fort with the nation’s flag flying atop the towers.
