Making apologies

It will be insensitive to say Nigeria is celebrating Independence- because Nigerians that I know are not. Most are just hissing at the holidays, wondering what bad news comes next.

Dele Giwa was one of the bright spots in Nigeria’ history. But he was assassinated in 1986 through a letter bomb and up till now investigation as to whom the prepertrators were hasn’t been successful.

Born to poor parents working in the palace of Ooni of Ile-Ife, Dele excelled above all odds and studied outside the country to earn his journalism degree. He made his mark in his 39 years.

Dele was survived by his wife, children, mother 😢, his friends with whom he founded Newswatch - his newspaper house.

I read Dele Giwa’ biography - “Born to run” years ago. This I can tell you, the injustice our country continues to serve us has deprived hope of any celebration.

So many other deaths have occurred and are unaccounted for; lives and families destroyed in one way or the other. Our land is soiled with the blood of its citizens, their endless cries, their unappreciated efforts and their dying hope.

Today, I make apologies on behalf of Nigeria to Nigerians.
