Cicada

Cicadas are insects that have prominent eyes, two wings and produce sound.

Cicada’ sound is known to have helped determine change in weather in antiquity. Their sound helps to distinguish their gender.

Another peculiarity of Cicadas is their adaptation against predators. Female Cicadas lay eggs that fall under perennial plants then hibernate underground for years as long as 17 years, before emerging together in large numbers that predators can finish eating.

But during this hibernation, Cicada eggs actually undergo molting - a metamorphosing process to grow.

Because of their hibernating character, there are various categories of Cicadas. Although there’re more than 3000 species, we have periodic cicadas which can live underground for 13 or 17 years, also annual ones that emerge at yearly season.

Throughout history, humans have consumed cicada, used it in literary works, used it as medicine, given it a place in religion and cultures etc.

In China, Cicadas were cages for their song 😁
