Ayò olópón
“Ayò Olópón is a Yoruba traditional/indigenous board game. It is usually played by two people, while the spectators will gather round the two players to watch their arithmetic/mathematical calculation skills/dexterity that brings out a winner.”
“Each of the players have 24 ayò seeds as their credit to trade with. Whoever has the largest number of ayò at the end of the game is the winner.”
“Now, what is Ayò? Ayò is a small, round, oval shaped, hard local substance usually in tread-tree branches seen in forest areas. It is enclosed in an explosive leaf, so that when this leaf becomes dry, it will burst and this hard substance called Ayò will come out of it. Ayò is not edible, its only usage is for playing Ayò Olopon; our local game.”
The wooden board in which the game is played has 2 rows each with 6 rounded columns. A row belongs to a player and 4 Ayò seeds are placed in each column at the start of the game.
The game is played to the right wherein a player moves seeds from a column of his/her choosing towards calculated columns that will end up in two or three seeds. If this occurs, the player picks up the seeds as his/her win and on it goes till the seeds are exhausted.
