Monarch butterfly



Of all insects and animals, they have one peculiarity - transcontinental flight in which they engage the sun. Monarch butterfly has orange wings with black lines and white dots.


Monarch butterfly are native to the Americas. They breed in one place and spend the winter in another. Their eggs are laid on the milkweed plant.

Their colorful wing warns predators that they’re foul tasting and poisonous. This poison comes from their consumption of milkweed but Monarch butterfly themselves have become immune to the poison.


After breeding in Canada and Northern USA, Monarch butterfly migrate to the mountains of central Mexico where they wait out the winter.


In their travel, Monarch butterfly use the sun to stay on course while on cloudy days, they use their magnetic compass 😃. In addition, they have efficient muscles which aid this long distance travel because of their special genes.


Monarch butterfly live an average of 6-8 months. Climate change is one of the threats to their survival.
