Himalayas

 


Let me warn you - there are many terms here I am trying to understand or pronounce correctly. 

  The Himalayas is a mountain range across 5 countries; Bhutan, China, Nepal, India, Pakistan. It runs from Northwest to Southeast.


 The Himalayas formed because of the movement of the India subcontinent million years ago to fuse with Asia at the Tibetan plateau. In summary, it separates India from the Tibetan plateau.


  Himalayas in Sanskrit translates to dwelling or container or land of snow. It has ten of the world's highest mountain including mount Everest - the highest, others are Cho Oyu, Kangchenjung, Makalu...

                       Mount Everest.

  Between Himalayas and Tibetan plateau is the wide valley, Indus - Tsangpo suture in Nepal. Also, Kathmandu (Nepali capital) is the largest city of the Himalayas.  

  Himalayas is made up of;

  • Sivalik Hills (South).
  • Tibetan Himalayas (North).
  • The great Himalayas.
  • The lower Himalayan range.

  The Kali Gandaki gorge in Nepal splits the Himalayas into West and East in Orography (study of mounts).
  Everest and 4 other highest mounts are in the Mahalangar Himal east of the highway between Nepal and China. The Himalayas end on the west close to Nanga Parbat (a 8000metre peak) and intersect here with the Karakoram and Hindu Kush mountain ranges in Pakistan.

  The rocks of the Himalayas are mainly sedimentary and metamorphic rock. It has large glaciers with large deposits of snow.

  The Himalayas is geologically active with earthquakes, it continually increase in height every year. The climate determines transport like trekking or mountaineering for tourists. With every rise in height, the cold increases.   

  The animals and plants in the Himalayas differ with change in height, soils, rainfall pattern and climate. The tallest trees are found in Tibet. The Himalayan forests have wide varieties of medicinal plants, there precious stones like coal... 

    Hundreds of lakes are in the Himalayas of which are; Rara, Manasarovar... The mountain lakes are called Tarns when formed by glaciers. Rivers like Karnali, Yarlang Tsangpo, Sarda, 5 Rivers of the Punjab plus many others flow or source in the Himalayas.

   There are various cultures and religions. Hindus, Islam, Buddhists, and Animist inhabit the Himalayas with their sacred sites.
