Coober Pedy
A town of about 2,000 individuals with the largest Opal (a gem) mining sites in the world - Coober Pedy is found in South Australia north of Adelaide.
Known for its underground housing brilliance, the source of which residents devised a means to avoid the scorching heat during the day. The houses are dugout from caves which provide a cooler atmosphere.
A building may be built as large as a 3 room apartment. A whole motel for visitors can be underground ☺.
Its no incident that Coober Pedy from its Aboriginal source means boys' waterhole.
The town relies mainly on tourism and mining industries. As small as it is, Coober Pedy has an airport, hybrid solar power grid, postal services, a theatre, free community publication, sports team.
For tourists, the underground orthodox churches are an attraction.
There's little vegetation because of low rainfall. Coober Pedy seats on the edge of a desert, this can also be attributed as the source of the hot daytime weather.
The town presents beautiful scenery which has been used for movies, a racing game...
Years ago, crude oil was discovered in the outskirts. This potential can make the country an oil exporter.
Where I reside, our head count is boasted of compared to amenities which define a community. Most buildings underground are for residents and visitors use.
