Victoria amazonica

Victoria amazonica belongs to the water lily family of plants. It’s the largest in the family having a diameter of about 3 metres and grows a stalk (stem) as long as 8 metres deep into the water.

On its discovery in early 19th century, Victoria amazonica was named after the ruling British monarch and was given other names like Victoria regia...

Countries in the Amazon basin of South America like Guyana, are natural habitats of Victoria amazonica. Some are also grown in botanical gardens in other countries.

The underside.

To protect itself from fish that are herbivores, the underside of Victoria amazonica has sharp spines. The spines form ribs that trap air and make the plant remain afloat. With its support structure, this water lily can support a weight of about 65 pounds i.e 29.47kg, mostly a child’s weight 😁.

Or if you’re adult small weight 😂

Victoria amazonica gives beautiful flowers as big as 40 cm which last only two days. On the first, the whitish flower is pollinated by a beetle and on the second the color changes to purple-red.
