Lacrosse

Lacrosse was played before colonies were established in North America as far back as 12th century.

It was played in honor of the creator. Using a stick about 1.5 meters long, a ball half its length lasting for 2-3 days with hundreds of men playing on a field long enough to contain the number.

Arrival of the West modified the Native American style reducing the violence and number of players.

Lacrosse means “the stick” in French. The name was given by a French missionary who saw the natives playing in Canada. By mid 19th century, Englishmen had adopted the game. From Canada, it spread to other countries.

There are four types of Lacrosse each with different rules, equipment, sticks and field. They’re;

  • Box Lacrosse (played indoor)
  • Field Lacrosse (outdoor)
  • Women Lacrosse
  • Intercrosse (Mixed gender)
Today, it’s a maximum of 4 players a team in field lacrosse. Protective gear is worn for women’s Lacrosse, physical contact is disallowed. In Intercrosse, there’s no contact with standardized rules, a different Lacrosse stick and 1 bigger ball.

Lacrosse hasn’t been prominent on world stage. 62 nations are members of World Lacrosse, in 2019, Ghana joined. To be included in olympics, at least 75 countries must be members.
