Born in 6th July, 1935 as Lhamo Thondup in Amdo, Tibet, he was recognized as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama in 1937 and publicly declared in 1939 as the 14th Dalai Lama.
The Dalai Lama is an important monk in the school of Tibetan Buddhism, the Gelug school. He also holds political duties apart from being Tibet's spiritual leader.
