Súngbó Erédó
Located in Ijebu - Ogun state - surrounding an area bigger than modern cities, Súngbó Erédó is believed to be the largest earthen structure built by man.
According to carbon dating, Súngbó is believed to have been built around 800-1000 AD commissioned by a wealthy queen of the Ijebu people of Yorùbá land - Bilikisu Súngbó.
Súngbó served as a fortification, a large and high city wall with moat to impede invaders. According to legend, it’s believed the city traded in large amounts of gold and ivory - which remains to be discovered from excavations.
After discovery by foreign archaeologists, Súngbó came to limelight. It’s being put forth and if approved will become a UNESCO world heritage site.
It’s disheartening that Nigeria still doesn’t value the treasure of history and tourism that can be derived from Súngbó. No major effort in restoration or image projection for the structure has been carried out.
