Rattan
Rattan is a palm. But of a different class to our palm kernel tree. Though non-timber, it encompasses uses that timber can’t mostly because of its elastic nature.
Rattan grows mainly in the wilds of Southeast Asia. They have about 600 species.
They were called Manila cane - because of their flexibility. But they can be used for corporal punishment too 😂.
Some Rattan fruits are edible and their leaves can be used as toothbrush 😜
Rattans exhibit mutualism with ants. They create space for anthills and the ants in return protects them from herbivores.
Rattans are used to make furniture, bags, clothing, handicrafts, in some sports...
They also protect forest trees when allowed to grow. Some People already use them as herbs and their medicinal value is also being evaluated.
Great write up
