The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari (a summary.)

Julian Mantle, a hotshot lawyer collapsed in the courtroom. John a junior and friend was there to witness the fall of a giant.

Julian Mantle at 53 years had all the societal properties - private jet, Armani suits, red Ferrari...but then his life had taken a downward spiral by the time John met him. He spent long hours in his law practise, moved with the demolition gang (they smoked, drank...) lived recklessly. He collapsed from a heart attack in the same courtroom he had won "The mother of all trials."

After this incident, Julian left his world behind, sold his properties and headed off into the mountains in search of the Sages of Sivana who were believed to hold the key to long lasting happiness.

John was surprised to see his friend again after three years dressed as a Monk. Not only the years absence but the appearance of Julian showed John his friend had experienced a change he was about to discover.

Julian started his explanation after John promised to pass on the knowledge he was about to receive which Julian had learned and cultivated into his life from the Sages of Sivana. His main teacher was Yogi Raman.

Julian narrated a story first on which all the principles he had learned is derived. It's surmised thus;

Inside a beautiful garden, a towering lighthouse stands in its centre. Suddenly the door of the lighthouse opens and a giant Japanese sumo wrestler walks out almost naked but with a cable wire to his waist. As the giant strolls into the garden he finds a stopwatch which he wears and then falls to the ground. He awakens due to the fragrance of some yellow roses and stands to his feet to behold a long path covered with diamonds. This paths leads him to eternal bliss.

From the story comes representations of principles;

  • The garden - MIND. To make a garden beautiful you have to work it. The same goes with the human mind. A quote from Jonas Stalk, "I have had dreams and I have had nightmares. I overcame the nightmares because of my dreams." Think of pulling the weeds from your flower garden - your mind.
  • The lighthouse - LIFE PURPOSE. Just like the lighthouse serves as a refuge and guidance to sailors, your life purpose serves the same in the seas of life. Be an achiever focused on life purpose.
  • The giant Sumo wrestler - SELF IMPROVEMENT. This is based on the principle of "Kaizen" a Japanese word for constant self expansion and growth. Advice is given on exercise, good nutrition, reading books and everything that aids self development.
  • Pink wire cable - DISCIPLINE. Training yourself to do the necessary things that better your life.
  • The Watch - TIME. Savor and make good use of every moment. Live as if death will come calling tomorrow.
  • Yellow roses - SELFLESSNESS. Be kind to everyone. There is a Chinese proverb that your hand retains the fragrance of what you give out.
  • Pathway of diamonds - Enjoy the present, it counts. The present gives you happiness. Laugh well. A quote I love, " what lies before us and what lies behind us are tiny matters compares to what lies within us."
John received and decided to make changes on what he has learned from Julian because he was also heading to the same fall.
While there are many principles about life in this book by Robin Sharma, it presents a realistic perspective of what can happen to anyone in the society.
