Penguins are birds whose wings have been modified into flippers so they can't fly. They live both on land and sea, though they are more adapted to aquatic environment and obtain their food from the same.
Most Penguins live below the equatorial line in the southern hemisphere because of their adaptation to sea life. This is against the former misconception.

Location of Penguins. |
They have dark dorsal and white ventral sides which aids their countershading camouflage against predators. Isabelline penguins have a shade of brown rather than black which reduce their camouflage ability and therefore their life expectancy. The largest living species is the Emperor Penguin and only the Galapagos Penguin live close to the equator in the temperate zone.

Their mode of movement is termed tobogganing, which conserves their energy while moving rapidly. They keep themselves warm by cuddling together in groups and rotating places. Their body system works to effectively balance heat loss and excrete salt.

Penguins have a high social life, both adults work on incubating their laid eggs except for Emperor Penguin where the male does it alone. Penguins defend themselves, they are not afraid of humans.
They are a media sensation, appearing in various genres like comics, cartoon, movies, games, music.... Some sport teams have named themselves after Penguins 😉
