Petra

Petra is a historic site in Southwest Jordan. It has been inhabited over time by humans. Known as Nabatean capital before it became a Roman colony, Petra stands as one of the rediscovered wonders of the world.

From its name, Petra’ structures are cut from red faced stone. As an oasis in the desert, its natural face makes Petra stand out with the innovative irrigation systems left by the Nabateans in 4th century BCE.

Petra at its height of prominence served as a trade route before sea trade overtook it’s importance, leading to its decline. Eventually, Petra sat empty for years.

Petra has many religious sites for both Islamic and Christian pilgrims. It includes the Mount, where Aaron  was believed to be buried and the rock where Moses struck for water.

Wadi Musa, serving as entrance to the city.

Today, Petra stands as a world UNESCO heritage site and the most visited tourist centre in Jordan. It reflects the history, innovation and tenacity of the human race.
